Boxing

Overcoming fear is arguably the most difficult personal undertaking, but at West Point it is a critical step toward becoming an effective leader, and it’s a rite of passage for cadets. Boxing is the ultimate mechanism to force yourself to face fear, one-on-one.

So I had never boxed before I came here. That was probably one of the hardest things I had to do trying out. And I just kept telling myself I'm going to see it to the end.

I'm Cadet Estes from Dugway, Utah. And this is the Army West Point Boxing Team.

Everyone takes boxing. It's not voluntary. Everyone has to take it. The big thing with fear, they're trying to get cadets to overcome fear. And fear of the unknown is probably the greatest setback for cadets. Getting into a ring and fighting someone else is the best way to overcome that fear.

I would say I'm less scared to try new things now. I won nationals last year, my junior year, and I'm now the captain of the team. So I get to lead the best team in the corps in my opinion.

As captain, it's a big part of what I do is mentoring. You know, I got to mentor my brothers, essentially, to do the right thing. So that's probably my most enjoyable part about being team captain is the fact that I get to interact with my teammates and help them through West Point and hopefully, instill in them characteristics or beliefs that will guide them throughout their lives.
